    • Performed for a while with the Art Hickman band.

      [ Art Hickman Orch ]
      Theme song: Rose Room
      Here are a pair of very rare Photos. One is shows The Art HickmanBand. That's Art Hickman (far right) waving his baton. While most ofthe Musicians seem to be enjoying themselves, (especially the Bassplayer who is tearing apart his Bull Fiddle that is upside down), theviolinist seems to be asking himself, if he was sent to the correct'gig'. Another Photo is a Trio, with Hickman at the Piano. One of theother men is Vic King (nee: Victor Mesplou), but specifically whichone is not now known.
      The BigBands Database Plus thanks Ms. Suzette Estacaille for thesewonderful pictures above. Here's a good close up photograph ofHickman, at the piano, and here's the Hickman orchestra playing"Whispering", circa 1920.

      It's just possible that Hickman's orchestra might have been America'sFirst Big Band. The band was formed in San Francisco in 1913, andgained national recognition when Broadway showman Florenz Ziegfeldbrought the orchestra to the East Coast (New York City) to star in oneof his Broadway shows.

      Long resident of St Francis Hotel, San Francisco, CA. Art Hickman wasthe composer of "Rose Room".

      Brief Chronology:
      ================
      1919
      Flo Ziegfeld booked Hickman into the Biltmore Hotel, and then into theZiegfeld Roof, in New York CIty.
      1920
      Hickman's success was such that he sent a 2nd band to London in 1920(Art Hickman's New York London Five), where they played the RoofGarden of the Criterion Restaurant. Meanwhile the main orchestrareturned to the west coast, but Hickman retired shortly afterwards anddied in San Francisco, CA., in 1930 at the early age of forty-four.

      Hickman occupies a particular niche in history, his appearance in theZiegfeld follies being the first time a dance band had ever played onstage in a Broadway show. "Click" here for still more informationabout Art Hickman

      Also performed with Bert Ralton and his Havana Band
